Spring Riding

Now that riding season has begun, one of the things we should be watching for is road conditions. The winter has caused many potholes and road conditions that can cause dangerous situations.

While riding, keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you, especially trucks. Vehicles will block the view of the road ahead of you making it impossible to see obstacles down the road. Look thru their windshield if possible to be aware of things in the road.

Potholes

Potholes can cause serious damage to the tire and rim if you drop into one. Try and look far enough ahead and don't focus on the pit or you will go into it. See there, go there.

Grooves

Grooves cut into the pavement can also be dangerous for a motorcyclist. Be aware of how they are cut and do not make any drastic moves. Maintain your speed and do not over-react to the movement of the motorcycle. Riding this out can be very groovy dude.

Drop-offs

Watch the side of the road for uneven pavement or drop-offs. If you get caught off guard and go off the pavement and there is a large rise in the pavement, do not try and cut over this lip. Ride it out until you can find a safe place to re-enter the road or stop your motorcycle in a safe area and look ahead for a good place to re-enter the roadway. Trying to go over this can cause tire damage or make you to drop the motorcycle.

Paint stripes

Be careful of paint strips especially when they are wet, they are very slippery and cause you so slide. Try to maintain your speed and do not make any drastic moves. Try to stay perpendicular to the stripe if possible.

Tar Snakes

In warmer weather, tar snakes in the road can make you motorcycle wiggle when riding over them. Ride in control and do not make overly corrective moves. Some types of tires react better to the tar snakes. You should be aware of this condition so you don't get bit.

Gravel

Riding in gravel with a heavy touring bike can also be a challenge, especially if gravel is located in corners. Look ahead and try to avoid it if possible.

Ride in control when these conditions occur and learning to master these road hazards will keep your mind out of the gutter.
