Road Trip Tool Tips

It is finally motorcycle road trip time after a long painful winter. Our bikes and our bodies are in shape, so now it's time to head out on the road. (Notice I did not say 'hit the road'?) Some additional items you may want to pack to help in an emergency situation may help keep you on the road instead of stranded along side the road.

Siphon bulb & hose

In the event we ignore our fuel gage and run out of gas, a siphon bulb and hose may be of great use. Hopefully you are traveling with a friend that is willing to siphon gas from their gas tank into yours. Keep in mind this will probably cost you many years of humiliation if you have not paid them generously to keep this 'off the records'.

Electrical tape

If you have problems with some wiring, this is good to have along to fix those repairs or most any situation where tape is needed. For example, on a full-face helmet, put electrical tape at the top of your visor to keep sun out of your eyes.

Duct tape

The tape that has solving everything except world peace is a must have when traveling. This can be used where electrical tape can't be used. It can be use to fix broken parts, mend clothing or keep a chatty passenger quiet.

Spare headlight & tail light bulbs

Pack and extra headlight and tail light bulbs in bubble pack and wrap with duct tape. This can be a lifesaver if you are stranded with out lights. You did remember to pack the duct tape, right?!

Tire repair kit

There are several tire repair kits available to plug your tires for emergencies only. This will get you back on the road long enough to replace that damaged tire. Practice on an old tire to learn how to use the kit BEFORE you have a flat on the road. Old tires seldom run over nails, only brand new tires!

Small compressor or bicycle pump

Now that you repaired your flat, having a way to pump up the tire is a nice follow up procedure. Small compressors with the plastic case removed are small enough to store in your bike, or a small bicycle pump can be used as well. Nice to have if you camp and need to fill an air mattress too.

Quarters for phone

If you need to call someone and don't have a cell phone, always tape some extra quarters in your bags for emergency use. Don't forget to replace them after using them up. Duct tape to the rescue yet again!

Cell phone & charger

If you are the techno-geek type and have a cell phone, don't forget your battery charger. A cell phone with a dead battery is just a boat anchor you don't need to bring along. If you forget the charger, remember, you did bring the quarters and the duct tape, right?!

Gold wing book for phone numbers & addresses

If stranded, having your Goldwing book for phone numbers and addresses can be invaluable tool. While you probably do not know the people, you DO know they are motorcyclists and can be trusted. This can truly be a lifesaver if stranded along the road in an unfamiliar area.

Battery jumper cables

Small jumper cables can be used if you run your battery down and need a quick jump. These can be easily made at home with heavy wire and clamps.

Swiss army knife

Keep a Swiss army or Leatherman type of knife for the times when the rest of your tools may not work. Also handy for the after ride bottle of wine to tell lies and celebrate your long ride.

Notebook and pencil

Keep a notebook and pencil to write down important items or to take notes for future rides.

First Aid kit

First Aid kits are available commercially or you can make your own. Use all the standard items and add any additional items you may need for your medical conditions or allergies.

Most of these things are items that you already have around the house. They can be put in a small bag to keep with you in the event of road emergences. Check these items on a regular basis to make sure they are still usable and practice using them in a controlled 'emergency test.' These are road tool tools to keep you tooling along.
